The upgrade of the rail to allow larger freight into Edinburgh City EMCL/WCM4 gauge enhancements; removal of OB25 Duddingston Bridge.
The works package covers the removal of masonry arch bridge over rail infrastructure within a 29 hour possession. Contained within the bridge deck were 12 no. fibre-optic cables (main feed to the Scottish Office). Also adjacent to the masonry arch was a 500mm cast water main all of which had to remain live at all times and be protected during works, 9 m long by 8 m wide.
Install temporary bridge section to support and protect fibre-optic cables, install protection to water pipes. Install track protection over both lines and signal cables.
Access site with two 30 Ton demolition rigs fitted with Hydraulic hammers, positioned on each side of the bridge.
Remove parapet walls from both sides of bridge, remove road make up over brick arch. Brake down arch onto crash mat and load all material, remove from site.
Remove walls to desired height and prepare for new beams for the new bridge. Remove all track protections and carry out full inspection of area of works. Reopen line to rail traffic.
Removal of bridges within 29 hour possession (24hrs) with no accidents or incidents. Demolition materials were disposed of to licensed recycle site. The whole of the works was completed within time scale, on budget and to clients satisfaction.
